About me and science

My name is Eileena Raju and I am 19 years old. I have completed the first year of my Biology, Chemistry and Psychology A levels.

I did always enjoy my science lessons in school but I wasn’t really interested in doing a career in Science at first as I wasn’t interested in any science books or any scientific documentaries. Instead, I was more interested in business than science at the time, but as I was studying business, I felt that this wasn’t for me and that I wanted to go into something else in the future.

As I wasn’t very sure what career I wanted to go in to, I took a gap year last year to find out what I definitely want to do and which job I would be most happy and most comfortable in. In that year I went to my father’s workplace, who is a clinical respiratory physiologist and this was the thing that made me change my mind about working in the science field. I had helped around and met different patients who came to the hospital. I really enjoyed meeting these people and I enjoyed helping them out.

I had also tried out teaching in the gap year that I took, which was also fun, but I felt that Science was more for me. This job involves testing to all the areas of cardiology and respiratory physiology and after the experience I had of working in this workplace, I knew that this was the career that I wanted to do in the future.

Also by doing these A levels, it has made me more interested in the science field as for our biology coursework, I wanted my topic to be related to lungs as I wanted to learn more about respiratory healthcare, so the topic I chose to do was emphysema where I had learnt about what happens where there is over inflation and blockage of the air sacs in the lungs. By choosing this topic, it made me become more interested in doing a healthcare physiology degree.

So I am hoping that I will do a healthcare science degree at University in the future, but as a back up, I have a bio medical science degree in mind as it can still get me in the position that I want to go in to.

I am new to blogging and I think this is a great opportunity to communicate with other people and hear their views and thoughts. So I am happy to hear any comments.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing your story, Eileena. I really enjoy hearing about the many ways that students become interested in science. Keep up the great work!

Well done getting this set up. I hadn’t realised you were destined for a career in business – I’m glad I’ve been part of the drive to convert you to science! Not everyone knows what they want to do when they’re younger, so this is not unusual, and it’s an interesting answer to such questions in university interviews.

I think your career choice is great – I’d love to see more students going into the allied professions, as so much life-altering work is done by these healthcare workers. I’ve also enjoyed reading your writing – you aren’t one of the noisy ones in class, so it’s nice to see a medium where you can be heard.

Perhaps you might be able to combine your interest in healthcare and business once you have completed your degree.

  4. Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I will keep them all in mind.
@Julia – this profession is getting very popular, but there are only in a few universities that do a healthcare science course. Hopefully more unis will do this course in the future.
